The trendy region of Vinings has, as of late, become an upscale area. Situated at the far northwest corner of the city, Vinings is the perfect option for Atlanta college students who want to have easy access to the city’s resources but don't want to live in a hectic urban environment.
Numerous new restaurants are popping up in Vinings and establishing reputable names. Boutique shopping is also a major draw. The Buckhead area of Atlanta allegedly earned its name based on the legend of a slain deer being mounted over the door of a 19th Century tavern. Even though the original tavern is long gone, taverns and bars are still at the center of Buckhead’s culture to this day.
Although Buckhead is known for its rowdy drinking crowd, its downtown area is a safe and appealing place to visit, with many notable stores, eateries, spas and fine hotels. Buckhead’s ever-growing number of luxury condos is attracting the city's young and newly prosperous, while citizens who come from “old money” have happily settled along the shady lanes just west of the Peachtree area.
The Virginia Highlands section of Atlanta is primarily residential and is aptly located at the intersection of Virginia and North Highland Avenues. The rise of property value and rent in Virginia Highlands has driven the struggling artist crowd to the downtown area, but numerous art galleries displaying both modern and folk art have been established in their stead. Now a population of professionals—ranging from twenty-something to middle age—mingles with a smaller university student population, which tends to capitalize on Virginia Highland’s vibrant nightlife by patronizing its plethora of bars and restaurants.
Residents and Atlanta college students living in Virginia Highlands are in walking distance of Inman Park and Midtown’s Piedmont Park. Shopping in Buckhead is always a pleasure, given the casual and quirky appeal of its fun boutiques. Students also enjoy a number of shopping facilities at the Perimeter Mall, located just in Northeast Atlanta.
The Little Five Points area includes the old neighborhoods of Inman and Chandler parks. Little Five Points is Atlanta’s own bohemia. With its piercing parlors, unique pubs, thrifts stores, live theaters, bookstores, cool music venues and funky cafes, Little Five Points has changed considerably over the past century. Students attending Atlanta colleges will love everything Little Five Points has to offer!
It may be hard to imagine, but the city has numerous other entertainment and recreation options—they are too numerous to mention each one individually. Discover more about living and attending college in Atlanta.
